ISRO Chief says developing cybersecurity tools and solutions is very important in today's era

The chairman of the ISRO, S. Somanath, stated on Thursday that it is critical to create an ecosystem for the development of cyber security tools and solutions in this day and age, when infrastructure that has been erected over time is susceptible to cyberattacks. He also set the cornerstone for Cyber Nalanda, an advanced research and development center for cyber security coming up in Bengaluru. Cyber Nalanda is the brainchild of SISA, a global cybersecurity solutions company powered by forensics.

“I was from a generation of engineers who started their careers without knowing computers. The transitioning from that time to now has been tremendous,” said Somanath.

He said that security used to be limited to antivirus software.

“But now, as applications are expanding, threats are also expanding. The cybersecurity threat is not limited to theft of personal data alone. It is now at a much greater scale—it is also to do with the security of the nation itself,” said Somanath.

He brought up the fact that the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) many successful missions, such as Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan, were frequently directed from a distance, making them susceptible to cyberattacks.

“So, it is imperative that we strengthen the research in this domain,” added Somanath.

Cyber Nalanda’s goal is to become a global center for cybersecurity innovation, with an emphasis on academic collaboration, according to SISA CEO and founder Dharshan Shanthamurthy.

“With the rapid advancement of technologies like AI, robotics, 6G, and quantum computing, the risks we face are escalating. There is an urgent need for innovative approaches to address these emerging threats,” he added.

He said, to this effect, SISA will be dedicating 10 percent of its annual revenue to R&D.

“Cyber Nalanda will also offer ANAB Accredited certification programmes to equip the next generation of cybersecurity professionals, addressing the global shortage of 3.5 million unfilled jobs in the field,” said Shanthamurthy.
