Dawn Zimmer has been appointed principal deputy chief information officer by the Department of Energy.
Since November 2019, Zimmer has been the executive director for information technology experience and engagement at Virginia Tech. He made the announcement in a Friday LinkedIn post.
Zimmer’s Public and Education Sector Experience
She worked for the Federal Aviation Administration in a variety of capacities before coming to Virginia Tech. As the director of business partnership services, she was in charge of creating the FAA Customer Experience Division, enhancing user onboarding procedures, and guaranteeing safe and dependable access to air traffic support systems. Zimmer also held the positions of management operations manager, chief of staff for the Office of Finance and Management, and strategy manager for the agency’s core services and customer engagement.
She also held positions as product manager at GE Capital, director of customer assistance and training at Ulticom, and deputy director at the Department of Justice’s Office of the CIO.
According to FedScoop, Brian Epley, who departed the DOE earlier in 2024 to take the CIO position at the Department of Commerce, was succeeded by the new deputy CIO. When the Biden administration concludes, current DOE CIO Ann Dunkin is also anticipated to depart the agency. In the interim, until DOE selects a permanent replacement, Zimmer would operate as CIO.
