Chinese AI platform DeepSeek surges in popularity, surpassing ChatGPT in US app downloads

The Spectator Index reports that within a week of its official launch, the Chinese AI platform DeepSeek surpassed OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the US App Store download rankings. This milestone demonstrates fierce rivalry from well-known firms like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI.

Additionally, Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, congratulated DeepSeek on social networking site X. Additionally, he expressed his excitement in utilizing DeepSeek models.

What is DeepSeek?

DeepSeek R1, a sophisticated big language model created by the Hangzhou-based business DeepSeek, is intended to improve analytical and reasoning skills. The model uses a hybrid architecture that combines chain-of-thought reasoning with reinforcement learning. DeepSeek-R1 and DeepSeek-R1-Zero are the two versions that are available; the latter provides unsupervised fine-tuning for enhanced reasoning capabilities.

Why DeepSeek is getting popular

DeepSeek’s remarkable performance and reasonable cost are the main reasons for its growing popularity. DeepSeek R1 costs only $0.55 per million input tokens, in contrast to OpenAI’s ChatGPT o1, which costs $15 per million. Furthermore, the model has apparently outperformed OpenAI o1 in several benchmarks and shown higher performance in coding tasks, with a 97% success rate.

Comparisons between DeepSeek R1 and other AI models are all over social media. Its smooth performance on smartphones and capacity to do intricate activities like mathematical calculations have been commended by users. Notably, DeepSeek has made its R1 model available in smaller, more portable versions that may be used on laptops and other devices.
