The South East District’s Cyber Police Station has detained Kalyan Roy, a scammer who lives in Thakurmura village in Tripura, which is close to the Bangladeshi border. According to Delhi Police’s Cybercrime squad, the arrest resulted in the recovery of Rs 2.40 lakh.
Sunil Verma, the complainant, said in the Cybercrime unit’s testimony that he had a Facebook conversation with an American woman in September 2021. Later, the woman messaged him on WhatsApp, saying that she was sending laptops, cell phones, gold jewelry, and several thousand US dollars by courier. On her behalf, she asked him to accept these things.
The statement from Delhi Police’s Cybercrime unit continued: “In October 2021, the complainant received a call from someone claiming to be a delivery partner, stating that a parcel containing precious items was lying at the courier office in his name. The caller requested a fee to release the parcel.”
The complainant paid a total of Rs 2,66,500 into a bank account supplied by the accused on several dates, believing the call to be authentic. But the caller ceased returning his calls after the payment was made.
The Cyber/SED team took up the investigation after a case was filed at PS Amar Colony.
The Cybercrime unit stated, “After extensive technical surveillance, the team ultimately identified the scammer as Kalyan Roy, a 26-year-old resident of Thakurmura, Sonamura, Sepahijala, Tripura.”
The squad then carried out many searches over the course of three days in the extremely sensitive and tribal area, concentrating on the accused’s home in Thakurmura village, which is close to the Bangladeshi border. The Cybercrime unit claimed that Kalyan Roy was taken into custody following persistent efforts.
