Germany's national statistics agency, Destatis becomes victim of a cyberattack, loses data
Destatis, Germany’s national statistics agency, announced Friday that it had been the target of a suspected data breach after the media reported that pro-Russian hackers had attacked the organization.

Destatis said in a statement it had “received indications of a possible data breach on November 13” in its IDEV data-sharing system, adding that the portal had been “taken offline as a precaution until further notice.”

According to Destatis, the Federal Office for Information Security has been tasked with looking into the matter.

Ruth Brand, the head of Destatis, is also in charge of organizing national elections, which is crucial given that Germany will hold a snap general election in late February.

As per media reports, earlier this week, 3.8 gigabytes of data were being sold on a so-called dark net forum after being taken from Destatis, most likely from the IDEV platform.

The majority of the stolen data included names, addresses, and account login credentials for companies that contribute data to the portal.

A group of pro-Russian hackers from Indonesia carried out the attack, according to media reports, and they have stated that they wish to expand their activities to include NATO nations.

In anticipation of the election in February, Germany is on high alert for any sabotage operations.

German intelligence chiefs have issued many warnings about Moscow’s and its allies’ attempts to launch cyberattacks or disseminate false information.

Berlin charged in May that members of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party were being targeted by an organization called ATP28, which is associated with Russian military intelligence.
