With the Department of Telecoms (DoT), regulator Trai, and private telcos launching new programs to combat the threat that is also causing cyber frauds and phishing assaults, there is a renewed drive to combat spam and unsolicited commercial communication.
Spammers have been targeted by regulators Trai and DoT, who have also been blocking numbers that appear to be involved in fraudulent activity.
Additionally, they have repeatedly met with senior leaders from telecom firms, requesting that they keep a watchful eye out for these kinds of activities and establishing new regulations to combat them.
A new AI-powered project by Airtel has also been launched to identify spam and alert its consumers, and Vodafone Idea has announced that it is launching an SMS spam management system using blockchain technology.
In an effort to check annoying callers and scammers, Trai and DoT have disconnected almost a crore mobile connection thus far. “Till date, more than one crore fraudulent mobile connections have been disconnected with the help of Sancharsaathi. Further, 2.27 lakh mobile handsets have been blocked for involvement in cybercrime/financial frauds,” they said recently.
Trai launched a significant campaign against intrusive calls in August, requesting that cell providers cut off the telecom services of organizations that are discovered to be abusing bulk connections to place unsolicited calls.
It said that for a maximum of two years, all operators would place such businesses on a blacklist.
Additionally, starting on October 1, telecom providers are required by Trai to verify if SMS messages containing non-whitelisted web links are being transmitted. In order to ensure a more secure and effective telecom ecosystem, the new rule has also been implemented to reduce the exploitation of SMS headers and content templates.
Additionally, starting November 1st, telecom companies are required by the regulator to guarantee that all messages may be tracked from sender to recipient.
A network-based, Al-powered spam detection solution that Airtel also unveiled earlier this month will greatly address the problem of spam calls and mails. Customers can use the free tool to receive real-time notifications about any suspected spam calls or SMS messages.
“Spam has become a menace for customers. We have spent the last 12 months to solve this comprehensively… (and) shield our customers from the continuous onslaught of intrusive and unwanted communications,” Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal said.
Vodafone Idea said it has set up a URL whitelisting platform that will be going live soon. “Vi plays an active role along with TRAI, COAI, and other telecom operators to enforce the Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) regulations, aiming to significantly reduce spam calls from unregistered telemarketers,” the company said.
