The Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the district police have been contacted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for information regarding the alleged cyber fraud case worth Rs 100 crore.
Media were informed by sources that the ED had sent a letter to the Punjab Police requesting case files and the identities of all those involved in the purported scam. Given the sum of money at stake and the international participation of the criminals, the case falls under the ED’s jurisdiction. About ten days ago, the cops were asked for the record.
“It is not only a matter of financial fraud. It also involves national security. The ED investigates such cases,” a source told the media.
It has been reported that the central agency received the record from the police.
An SIT led by V Neerja, Additional Director General of Police, is investigating the matter. The SIT was established earlier this month by Gaurav Yadav, the director general of police for Punjab.
On the other hand, ADGP Neerja denied knowing about the ED’s letter. She claimed to the media that she had not seen the letter and that the Mohali district police had likely been contacted to submit the record.
After Punjab Police Inspector Amanjot Kaur filed a letter to the Punjab DGP on August 28, claiming that some powerful individuals were involved in the scam and that the probe ought to be moved outside of the Mohali area, the alleged cyber fraud case came to light. She insisted that the State Cyber Cell or the Bureau of Inquiry be given control of the inquiry.
The case was being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Dr. Sandeep Garg, the Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police at the time. However, Inspector Amanjot Kaur, who exposed the fraud in January and oversaw the district police’s cyber cell, claimed that some of her senior officers had intimidated her and advised her to avoid the matter.
When Inspector Kaur took over as head of the District Cyber Cell on January 9, she raided a call centre that was purportedly run out of a residence in Sector 108. An FIR was filed against the purported contact centre owner, Varinder Raj Kapooria, Sanket, Sonu, Rajat Kapoor, and Nikhil Kapil, in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Information Technology Act and Indian Penal Code.
Also, in April, the Mohali district court ordered the filing of a formal complaint (FIR) against Inspector Amanjot Kaur following the filing of an application by Palak Dev under Section 156(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), in which the petitioner claimed that the officer had sought a bribe of Rs 25 lakh from them. The Punjab and Haryana High Court, however, halted the lower court’s orders. October 16 is the next scheduled hearing date.
