Grok, a chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) business xAI, is now available to all users on the social media network X (formerly Twitter). Only X premium subscribers had access to the Grok AI chatbot when it was introduced last year. However, free users can now also access the chatbot. According to reports, Musk’s xAI began testing a free version of Grok in certain areas last month. By making Grok free for all users, the chatbot will be more accessible and might potentially compete with other free chatbots. This covers choices such as Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic’s Claude, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. A number of X users also confirmed the Grok chatbot’s appearance on the social media site.
Both the mobile app and the web version of the chatbot are accessible. Nevertheless, Grok allows free users to send up to ten messages every two hours, and the chatbot can produce three photos in a single day. This makes the AI chatbot more accessible and enables a larger audience to engage with it.
Grok AI chatbot’s journey so far
Musk-owned xAI introduced Grok, an AI chatbot, as a “humorous AI assistant” last year. Grok was only accessible to premium customers. Grok was updated in August with a text-to-image creation capability that has drawn criticism for creating contentious images, such as US Democrat Kamala Harris brandishing a gun and Taylor Swift in lingerie.
A stand-alone app for its AI chatbot Grok is also being considered by xAI, which was recently valued at $6 billion following its most recent fundraising round, according to the media. Grok would now be directly competing with other well-known AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, all of which have their own apps. Grok is currently only reachable via X.
