The primary EU privacy regulator for Google launched an investigation on Thursday to determine whether the search engine sufficiently safeguarded the personal information of users in the EU before using it to assist in the development of its core AI model.
Because most of the major American internet companies have their EU operations located in Ireland, the Data Protection Commission (DPC) in Ireland is the primary EU regulator for them. According to the DPC, the investigation focused on the Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM 2) of the Alphabet Inc. business.
“This statutory inquiry forms part of the wider efforts of the DPC, working in conjunction with its EU/EEA (European Economic Area) peer regulators, in regulating the processing of the personal data of EU/EEA data subjects in the development of AI models and systems,” the DPC said in a statement.
Following legal action by the Irish regulator, social networking platform X agreed last week not to utilize user personal data gathered from EU users to train its AI systems before giving them the chance to withdraw their consent.
A Google representative stated that the company takes seriously its responsibilities under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the EU and that it will cooperate with the DPC to address its inquiries.
The Court of Justice of the European Union, situated in Luxembourg, dismissed Google’s appeal this week against a punishment of 2.42 billion euros that was imposed over a seven-year period for a variety of anti-competitive actions.
