US and South Korea begin yearly exercises over North Korea's military and cyberthreats

South Korea and the US planned to boost their combined readiness to fight North Korea’s arms and cyberattacks by starting their annual summertime military drills on Monday.

Commencing their yearly summertime military drills on Monday, South Korea and the US aimed to strengthen their combined readiness to counter North Korea’s armaments and cyberattacks. The Ulchi Freedom Shield drills, which are scheduled to conclude on August 29, take place as North Korea attempts to deploy reconnaissance satellites and rushes to develop its nuclear and missile programs. The forces of the two nations have stated that the drills will simulate “realistic threats” in all domains, including the North’s missile threats as well as GPS jamming, cyberattacks, and other lessons learned from recent incidents.

According to officials, the South Korean military will independently conduct the concurrent government-led Ulchi civil defense drills in the event that the North launches a nuclear attack. Yoon Suk Yeol, the president of South Korea, called North Korea “the most reckless and irrational country in the world” and advocated for a rigorous preparation posture against it. “War can break out at any time, as we have seen in the Middle East and in Ukraine,” he said at a cabinet meeting.

The nature of war has evolved as well; it is now fought in a hybrid fashion that combines cyber, irregular, and regular warfare with psychological warfare based on false information and public opinion. Similar to last year, over 19,000 South Korean military personnel are expected to participate in 48 rounds of combined field training, which will include amphibious exercises, live fire training, and field maneuvers, according to Yoon.

Pyongyang has long accused the allies of inciting tensions through military exercises, referring to them as practice runs for a nuclear exchange. According to Seoul and Washington, the drills are defensive in nature and a reaction to the North’s threats.
