Sustainability is being steadily embraced despite the challenges of scalability and high costs, which prohibit consumer acceptance.

The rise of sustainability has been a high point in modern history for its implications for the health of our planet. In terms of heavy industry, manufacturing, and supply chains, it refers to practices and approaches that reduce the overwhelming reliance and burden placed on our natural resources. As for the packaging industry, newfound awareness and concern in recent decades have facilitated sustainable packaging with more responsible sourcing practices, resource management, and waste reduction. This approach also meets the modern customer at eye level, who is looking for ways to positively impact the environment themselves.

Many interesting possibilities have emerged as a result of design ingenuity overlapping with natural materials. Standout trends include biodegradable packaging, minimalist design, and eco-friendly packaging, which go hand in hand as examples of lean, effective design. Smart packaging is one such example, taken up in the e-commerce industry, where recyclable, low-impact material is combined with tools such as RFID tags, sensors, and QR Codes to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and offer valuable data throughout the supply chain.

This consumer push towards sustainability, together with stringent government regulations regarding waste and the environment, spawned a global market that was worth over 275.15 billion dollars in 2020. In India, early adopters of sustainability are the food industry, the primary care industry, and the cosmetics industry. Sustainability is being steadily embraced despite the challenges of scalability and high costs, which prohibit consumer acceptance.

However, by implementing a ‘Five Rs’ strategy in your workplace or even at home, it is possible to reduce your waste output sooner rather than later. The principles of the 5 Rs form the basis of a circular economy grounded in maximized product life cycles, usability, and a reduced carbon footprint. They are as follows:

R1: Refuse

As the name suggests, refuse to accept wasteful options as much as possible. It is recommended to ask vendors and clients to reduce unnecessary packaging, wrapping, and material usage in their products. Try to opt for recyclable and biodegradable products and packaging. The key here is time. The earlier you set these standards for yourself or your business, the easier it is to follow through.

R2:  Reduce

After establishing your plan, it is a good idea to assess your current practices and repeated habits. An example would be reducing the use of plastic-heavy stationary supplies, overly packaged pantry supplies, or even styrofoam cups.

R3: Reuse

Single-use plastics have given birth to a throw-away culture and aggravated the global plastic crisis. To tackle this, start by reusing items in your workplace and your personal life. One can start by replacing single-use utensils, cups, and plates with reusable or compostable alternatives.

R4: Repurpose

The goal here is that objects or items that cannot be refused, reduced, or reused can be repurposed. Commonly referred to as ‘upcycling’, this can be applied with endless possibilities, such as scrap paper used for packaging, old mugs used as pencil stands, and food scraps collected for plants.

R5: Recycle

Recycling is an environmentally friendly waste disposal method. Collecting and separating your waste for dedicated processing is an impactful and simple way of establishing a recycling routine.

With the help of technology and its countless advancements, it is easier than ever to find new ways to reduce, reuse, and repurpose. Combined with solutions like smart packaging and nature-inspired hybrid materials, the impact of each of our Rs can certainly help change the world for the better.
