France's second-biggest telecom provider, Free, admits to becoming the victim of a hack

Free, France’s second-biggest ISP, acknowledged being hacked this past weekend after an effort was made to sell allegedly stolen user data on a cybercrime forum.

According to media reports, the Paris-based company has warned that personal data was compromised in the incident, contacted France’s cybersecurity agency, and filed a criminal complaint with the nation’s public prosecutor.

It is unknown what kind of cyberattack it was. According to the company, “personal data associated with the accounts of certain subscribers” was accessed without authorization, and the hackers specifically targeted an internal management tool.

“The affected subscribers have been or will be informed by email shortly,” said the company, adding that passwords and bank card details were unaffected, as were the contents of any of its users’ communications.

Free has not acknowledged when the incident occurred or how many people were affected overall.

Following a cybercriminal posting on a cybercrime forum that they said were two datasets taken from Free that affected over 19 million subscribers, the firm acknowledged the situation.

“All necessary measures have been taken immediately to put an end to this attack and strengthen the protection of our information systems,” stated Free.

The incident comes after another hack in September that compromised a tool used by SFR, another French cellular company, to manage consumer orders.
