French authorities investigate ransomware attack on the Olympic site Grand Palais

The emblematic glass-roofed exhibition hall, Grand Palais in the heart of the French city was the venue for Olympic activities. Cybercriminals had targeted the institution’s key computer system, but the incident had not disrupted competition.

Paris prosecutors announced on Tuesday that French cybercrime police are looking into a ransomware attack against the Grand Palais exhibition venue in Paris, which is hosting Olympic competitions including fencing and Taekwondo. The institution’s main computer system was allegedly the target of cybercriminals, although the attack had no effect on the Olympic events taking place in the famous glass-roofed exhibition hall in the heart of the French capital.

The prosecutors stated in an email that the venue’s computer system also manages data for forty, primarily tiny museums that it is connected to. According to Franceinfo radio, the attackers threatened to publish the financial data they had gathered online if they did not receive the undefined amount of money and wanted payment of a ransom within 48 hours. In a statement, the French museum association “Reunion des musees nationaux—Grand Palais” announced that no data extraction had been found and that it had requested the national cybersecurity agency, ANSSI, look into the matter.

It further stated that there had been no effect on the Grand Palais, where the Olympic events proceeded without incident, and that the 36 museums under its management are still accessible to the general public.
