Representatives from the Group of Seven (G7) countries agreed at the end of a summit in Italy that national legislatures have a crucial role to play in ensuring cyber-security and setting the direction for artificial intelligence (AI) moving ahead.

G7 member states include Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. The leaders of these parliaments attended the three-day G7 Speakers’ Meeting in Verona, northern Italy.

Media sources state that the speaker of the European Parliament has also been invited.

According to the statement, each nation’s parliament is required to play a part in “drafting the corpus of rules (governance) that will ensure the sound use of AI within the framework of the principles and rights to which we all subscribe,” in addition to raising public awareness of the problem and encouraging further dialogue on the labor market.

Italy, which is now holding the G7 presidency, has emphasized the importance of creating global AI guidelines.

The gathering also covered topics of geopolitical development and security.
