GitHub appoints Alexis Wales as CISO

A statement on Alexis Wales’ LinkedIn profile states that she has been appointed Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at GitHub, thereby enhancing her position as a prominent figure in the cybersecurity sector of the computer industry. Before taking on the role of Chief Information Security Officer at GitHub, Wales held a number of prominent roles there, including Vice President of Security Operations, Senior Director of the Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT), and Deputy Chief Security Officer. In these roles, Wales oversaw the organization’s efforts to fortify its cybersecurity defenses.

Wales had an illustrious career in the US government before joining GitHub, working mostly for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). As the Associate Director for Threat Hunting at CISA, she played a key role in formulating tactics to identify and counteract sophisticated cyberthreats. Over the course of her more than 10 years at DHS, she held a number of positions, including program manager for infrastructure security, branch chief of federal network resilience, and Deputy Associate Director for threat hunting. Wales oversaw multibillion-dollar cybersecurity initiatives in these roles, with a primary focus on protecting federal networks and vital infrastructure.

Wales is regarded as a respected leader in the field thanks to her broad experience in cybersecurity, threat intelligence, and information technology transformation. Her background in overseeing extensive cyber programs guarantees the sustainability and efficacy of GitHub’s security operations in the face of changing cyber threats.

Wales has a dual B.A. from Brandeis University in history and anthropology as well as an M.A. in security policy studies from George Washington University. She also holds certificates in contracting, information security, program management, and Lean Six Sigma. She has completed executive leadership and senior acquisition management programs at the Homeland Security Acquisitions Institute and the Harvard Kennedy School.
