Together with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has conducted a significant operation to dismantle a worldwide cyber heist syndicate that has been active since 2022. The syndicate has been guilty of defrauding individuals on the pretence of providing technical assistance services; it mostly targets foreign citizens. The network’s primary operator, Vishnu Rathi, was captured by the CBI in Mumbai. His home was searched and found to contain cash and gold valued at Rs 16 lakh and Rs 3.70 crore.
Using technical cyber support staff as their guise, the cyber fraud ring mostly targeted foreigners. The syndicate contacted an American citizen between June and August of 2022 regarding one noteworthy case. They pretended to be bank representatives, making up the story that her account had been compromised and offering help to fix it. The syndicate persuaded the victim to transfer USD 4,53,953 (about equivalent to Rs 3.70 crore) to cryptocurrency wallets under the control of the scammers using this excuse.
CBI agents found 57 gold bars, each weighing 100 grams, Rs 16 lakh in cash, a laptop, a mobile phone, and other incriminating materials, including locker details, during a raid at Rathi’s home. We’re currently looking through the laptop—which was used to handle cryptocurrency transactions—to find more proof.
The FBI, the CBI, and law enforcement agencies from numerous other nations are working together via INTERPOL to locate further victims and trace the money trail from this crime, which was laundered through virtual assets like gold bullion and cryptocurrency. The scammers transformed their unlawful cryptocurrency riches into real assets by employing sophisticated techniques.
