Google Cloud appoints former federal CISO DeRusha

The global director of security and compliance at Google Cloud, Jeanette Manfra, will be the one to whom he will report.

Google Cloud said on Tuesday that Chris DeRusha, a former government Chief Information Security Officer, has joined the firm as its worldwide public sector compliance director.

DeRusha “will focus on the expansion of Google Cloud’s growing suite of innovative products and services—across AI, cloud computing, and security—to the public sector, both domestically and internationally,” said the company. He started on June 17, a company spokesperson told Nextgov/FCW.

Since his appointment in early 2021, DeRusha has worked as the government CISO. He resigned from the role last month. He was also the Office of the National Cyber Director’s deputy national cyber director for government cybersecurity at the time. In his capacity as the federal cyber chief, DeRusha oversaw the implementation of several cyber initiatives, such as the federal zero trust policy and increased software security activities.

The global director of security and compliance at Google Cloud, Jeanette Manfra, will be the one to whom he will report.

“As adoption of cloud solutions is expanding to meet new challenges… Chris’s unparalleled experience designing and implementing cutting-edge security and critical infrastructure programs in both the private and public sectors will be invaluable to our Google Cloud team and our global public sector customers,” Manfra said in a statement.

DeRusha was the top information security officer for the state of Michigan prior to joining OMB in 2021, and he also served as the chief information security officer for President Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign. In addition to her federal jobs at the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of Management and Budget, DeRusha has also held positions in the private sector.

In 2023, he was awarded Fed 100 awards, primarily for his efforts in putting federal cybersecurity instructions into practice.
