Google recruits Tim Brooks, the "top executive" of OpenAI

Tim Brooks, a co-lead on OpenAI’s video generator, Sora has left the company to work for Google DeepMind. Leading Sora’s development alongside William Peebles, Tim Brooks made an announcement on social media platform X (previous Twitter) about his transition to Google’s AI research division. According to Brooks, he will carry on working on “world simulators” at Google DeepMind and video production technologies.

In the X post, Brooks wrote: “I will be joining @GoogleDeepMind to work on video generation and world simulators! Can’t wait to collaborate with such a talented team. I had an amazing two years at OpenAl making Sora. Thank you to all the passionate and kind people I worked with. Excited for the next chapter!”

How Google welcomed Brooks

Replying to Brook’s X post, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis shared a welcome note. He said: “Thrilled to welcome@_tim_brooks to @GoogleDeepMind. So excited to be working together to make the longstanding dream of a world simulator a reality!!”

What is a world simulator and how it works

“World simulators” are AI models that can create interactive virtual worlds, according to Google DeepMind. The technology was used by the business in their recently launched Genie model, which can generate virtual landscapes that are playable and programmable using a variety of inputs, such as simple sketches, real photographs, and synthesized visuals.

In a 2023 research paper, DeepMind explains: “Applications of a real-world simulator range from controllable content creation in games and movies to training embodied agents purely in simulation that can be directly deployed in the real world.”

Brooks was a key figure in determining the research path and large model training of the Sora project, having co-led it since its start in January 2023. His resignation comes at a crucial moment for Sora, which is allegedly dealing with technological issues that could make it harder for it to compete with other video generating systems.

One of these difficulties is Sora’s allegedly lengthy processing rates; early iterations of the program took more than ten minutes to produce a one-minute video clip. Despite reports that OpenAl is developing a better version, Brooks’ departure might hinder the project’s advancement.

Additionally, Google offers Veo, a video creation model that was presented earlier this year at the 1/0 developer conference. The business recently revealed that producers would soon be able to create backgrounds and quick videos by integrating Veo into YouTube Shorts.
