Google search rival Perplexity AI is looking to expand its operations into India

Perplexity AI, a Google search competitor, wants to grow into India. It is now looking for someone who can contribute to the expansion of the nation’s AI-based search startup. On Saturday, January 11, Aravind Srinivas, the CEO and co-founder of Perplexity, made the news.

“I am looking to recruit someone to work together on growing Perplexity in India. It will be fun and intense. You must be based in India and willing to travel and meet with strategic partners and institutions—scrappy startup mode,” Srinivas said in a LinkedIn post.

He stated that interested parties can send their applications by email to [email protected] along with a CV and a brief note outlining noteworthy accomplishments.

Following Srinivas’ recent trip to India, when he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the job posting was made. The IIT Madras graduate remarked, “We had a great conversation about the potential for AI adoption in India and across the world.”

In December 2022, Andy Konwinski, Johnny Ho, Denis Yarats, and Srinivas formed Perplexity. Its primary offering is a “answer engine” that responds to a user’s search query with concise, thorough responses that include links and citations, utilizing the most recent AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

It asserts that “every answer” is “backed by citations from trusted news outlets, academic papers, and established blogs.” Perplexity claims to have more than 10 million active users globally.

Because it challenges the supremacy of IT giants like Google in the search market, Perplexity’s response engine has caused a stir in the rapidly expanding AI business. Prominent investors have supported it, including Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), silicon giant Nvidia, Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

At a value of $9 billion, the AI-powered search firm raised more than $500 million in its most recent investment round.

However, other publications have also sued Perplexity for copyright infringement. The AI startup has received cease-and-desist letters from other organizations, for allegedly scanning their websites without authorization and verbatim replicating parts of news stories.
