Organizations like hospitals, defense agencies, and energy providers will have their software tailored to comply with Australian regulations.

The research cooperation would integrate Google’s open-source vulnerability database and artificial intelligence services with the research methodologies of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), according to a statement released by the parties. According to Google, the program was a part of a five-year commitment it made in 2021 to invest A$1 billion ($675 million) in Australia at a time when the Australian government was severing its connections with US businesses in order to put harsher rules on foreign internet companies.

In addition, Google provides cybersecurity services to the United States as part of a $9 billion contract that the Department of Defense and several major tech companies have in place. Ejaz Ahmed, the project head at CSIRO, stated that cybersecurity software produced locally would “be better aligned with local regulations, promoting greater compliance and trustworthiness.” The results of the initiative will be published for simple access by operators of vital infrastructure.

In an effort to counteract an increase in cyberattacks, Google and Australia’s national research agency are collaborating to create digital tools that automatically identify and address software vulnerabilities for operators of vital infrastructure. Organizations like hospitals, defense agencies, and energy providers will have their software tailored to comply with Australian regulations.

Stefan Avgoustakis, head of security practice for Google Cloud in Australia and New Zealand, stated, “Software supply chain vulnerabilities are a global issue, and Australia has led the way in legislative measures to control and combat the risks.” Following a series of breaches in the last two years that exposed the personal data of half of Australia’s 26 million citizens, the government has been placing more stringent obligations on critical infrastructure operators to report and prevent cyberattacks.
