Indian Government deactivates 600,000 phones and blocks 800 apps in an effort to combat cyber fraud

The Indian government has responded firmly to the growing danger of cybercrime by taking significant measures to safeguard its people. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has put in place a number of strong measures designed to protect the digital environment and prevent online scams. Taking considerable action in response to the increasing incidence of cybercrime, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has deactivated 600,000 mobile phones associated with fraudulent operations and blocked over 800 apps that have been identified as scammer tools.

The I4C does more than merely deactivate phones. Additionally, 65,000 scam-related URLs have been blacklisted by the team, thereby blocking off many of the paths that cybercriminals take to prey on gullible people. These steps are part of a bigger effort to combat many types of cybercrime, such as romance scams, trading fraud, and investment scams. Almost 100,000 complaints about investment scams were received by the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) alone this year, which resulted in the filing of about 17,000 First Information Reports (FIRs) across the country.

Founded on October 5, 2018, the MHA’s Cyber and Information Security (CIS) section is home to the I4C. Coordinating actions to combat cybercrime across India is its main goal. The I4C works with state control rooms to keep an eye on important cases, contributes to the reduction of crime, and gives law enforcement organizations crucial legal and technical help. Within this framework, trained members of state police and paramilitary forces also operate, augmenting the overall efficacy of the center.

The Indian government is making it very apparent that it is committed to combating cybercrime and protecting its citizens in an increasingly digital world by launching these important efforts. These preventative actions seek to make the internet a safer place for all users while cyberthreats keep changing.
