The Rajya Sabha was notified on Wednesday that the Center had blocked 1.32 lakh International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers and 6.69 lakh SIM cards that were reported by law enforcement in an effort to combat cybercrime in the nation.
The central government and telecom service providers (TSPs) have developed a system to detect and block incoming international spoof calls that display Indian mobile numbers and appear to be coming from within India, according to Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who responded to a question in writing.
”Such international spoofed calls have been made by cyber criminals in recent cases of fake digital arrests, FedEx scams and impersonation as government and police officials,” the minister said.
Incoming international fake calls have been directed to be blocked by TSPs, he said.
”Till November 15, 2024, more than 6.69 lakh fake SIM cards and 1.32 lakh IMEIs, as reported by police authorities, have been blocked by the government of India,” he said.
He stated that the I4C’s citizen financial cyber fraud reporting and management system was introduced in 2021 to prevent financial criminals from embezzling money and to enable prompt reporting of financial frauds.
”So far, financial amount of more than ₹3,431 crore has been saved in more than 9.94 lakh complaints,” he said.
