Indian government has taken substantial action against fake SIM cards in an effort to tackle cybercrime in India. More than 80 lakh SIM cards that were issued using fictitious documentation have allegedly been terminated by the Indian government. To prevent these counterfeit SIM cards from being used for illicit purposes, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) detected and stopped them with the use of cutting-edge AI algorithms.

6.78 Lakh cybercrime-linked numbers blocked

The government has blocked 6.78 lakh cellphone phones that were directly linked to criminal activity in addition to phony SIM cards. The government’s commitment to providing secure telecommunications services has been demonstrated by this measure, which is reportedly a part of a larger assault on digital fraud.

AI-powered action to identify fake numbers

To find cellphone numbers linked to falsified papers, the DoT employed artificial intelligence (AI) methods. 78.33 lakh phony mobile numbers were discovered as a result of this exercise and have now been terminated. These discoveries were disseminated by the Department via its official X account.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Union Minister of Communications, went on to emphasize the importance of the cooperation between the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Department of Technology. Notably, by successfully handling complaints, the cybercrime helpline 1930 has saved 10 lakh consumers Rs 3,500 crores.

New policies by TRAI to tackle cybercrime

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has further introduced robust policies to curb cybercrime:

  • Telecom providers can follow the chain and source of fraudulent messages according to the Message Traceability Rule, which went into effect on December 11, 2024.
  • Blocking False Calls and Messages: Telecommunications companies started following more stringent rules to prohibit telemarketing calls and messages at the network level on October 1, 2024.

The government blocks fraudulent International WhatsApp numbers

The government has taken action against a number of foreign WhatsApp numbers that were being used for financial crime and online frauds, in addition to deactivating SIM cards.

How these measures benefit users

It is anticipated that these steps will alleviate users by decreasing fraudulent operations, spam messages, and phony telemarketing calls. The government is actively working to establish a more secure digital environment with the use of AI-powered technologies and more stringent regulations.
