The government has stated that, while it will need “a lot of consensus,” it is “open to the idea” of passing new legislation to control artificial intelligence. On Wednesday, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of information technology, told Parliament that ethical concerns about AI still exist and should be discussed.
“Ethical issues in AI are a global concern, and India is committed to addressing these challenges through robust debate and responsible innovation. The tools developed under projects will ensure that India stays at the forefront of ethical AI development,” he said.
In response to a question in LS, Vaishnaw stated that the opposition protested because the Modi government believes in “democratising technology,” which was not the case under the Congress era.
Vaishnaw stated that “fake narratives are a major challenge” that societies worldwide confront in response to a supplementary question about whether the government intends to introduce legislation controlling AI and fixing social media accountability. There must be broad agreement to establish legal and societal responsibility.”These are issues where freedom of speech comes on one hand, and accountability and having a proper real news network getting created, on other hand. These are things which need to be debated, and if House agrees and if there is a consensus in the entire society, we can come up with the new law.”
The minister discussed the government’s aggressive efforts to create domestic tools and technology while addressing privacy and AI governance concerns. He claimed that Application Development, which focuses on innovations that meet India’s particular needs, is one of the main pillars of the AI Mission. “To address the emerging landscape of AI, we have initiated eight projects aimed at creating tools and technologies within the country.”
