According to a digital advocacy group on Wednesday, in order to combat new types of online fraud and text scams, the government should study and modernize Republic Act 11934, also known as the SIM Registration Act. Scammers are increasingly using over-the-top apps like Telegram, Viber, Messenger, and Signal for their fraudulent schemes, according to a statement from Digital Pinoys.
“While it may not be covered by the SIM registration law, the government should prepare so that it will be addressed before it becomes a full-blown crisis like spam and scam texts all over again,” Gustilo said. A recent wave of text scams has been reported by the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, where victims are supposed to get fictitious messages from the MMDA or “warnings” that their card is being used.
