Government warns about high risk in Android smartphone users

The Indian Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has released a warning alerting users to various vulnerabilities present in Android smartphones. According to CERT-In’s advisory, an attacker may be able to utilize these to remotely run arbitrary code, obtain elevated privileges, and obtain sensitive data. The advice states that even Android tablets and phones powered by Qualcomm and MediaTek are affected.

The cyber security agency issued a warning about vulnerabilities in Apple iPhones one week prior to the release of the alert.

“Developing technologies that endeavor to support robust security and privacy is a priority for Qualcomm Technologies. The standard monthly Android security bulletins are an essential tool for the continued health of the Android ecosystem. For the issues mentioned, Qualcomm made fixes available to its OEMs in advance of the August Android Security bulletin. We encourage end users to apply security updates as they become available from device makers,” a Qualcomm spokesperson said in a statement to TOI.

Android software versions affected

The Android versions affected by these vulnerabilities are Android 12, Android 12L, Android 13, and Android 14, according to CERT-in.

“Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Android that could be exploited by an attacker to obtain sensitive information, gain elevated privileges, remotely execute arbitrary code, and cause denial of service conditions on the targeted system,” CERT-In said in its advisory.

“These vulnerabilities exist in Android due to flaws in the framework, system, kernel, arm components, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek components, Qualcomm components, and Qualcomm closed-source components,” it added.

What should Android users do?

Android users are advised by the cyber watchdog to install the necessary upgrades as soon as the corresponding original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) make them accessible. Here are a few more safety advice points:

Updating to the most recent version on your Android device

Downloading apps only from trusted sources
