Government intends to amend Guyana’s cybercrime laws, says Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo

On Thursday, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo gave residents reassurance that the government’s plans to change Guyana’s cybercrime legislation are not intended to restrict free expression.

Rather, Jagdeo stressed that the purpose of these modifications is to bring the nation’s laws into compliance with global guidelines established by the United Nations (UN).

Attorney General Anil Nandlall, who first stated the government’s intention to revise the current cybercrime legislation, which was first passed under the previous APNU+AFC administration, joins Jagdeo in making these remarks.

Jagdeo gave the people confidence that these changes would not restrict their right to free speech but rather focus on stopping illegal activity carried out online.

“We believe in free media and people freely expressing their views.”

“We are not for censorship on the internet.”

“We will promote people’s right to freely express themselves,” Jagdeo said.

The proposed reforms, as Nandlall clarified, are intended to improve the legal framework that governs cyberspace by aligning it more closely with UN model legislation that is intended to combat cybercrime.

Jagdeo also emphasized that the measures will only apply to unlawful activity, brushing off worries about possible overreach into regular online conversation.

“This is not about going after influencers, social media commentators, or ordinary citizens,” Jagdeo assured.

Jagdeo attempted to debunk rumors of growing government control over the internet, which he described as hysteria.
