A cybercrime team from the Gurugram police has detained an accused for allegedly duping a man out of Rs 5 lakh by acting as a representative of a matrimony site, according to authorities.
Jafir Ansari, a Jharkhand native, was named as the accused. On Saturday, the accused was taken into custody in Chennai.
The victim said that Rs 1,988 was automatically taken out of his bank account on December 2 in a report that the police received.
The following day, the complainant terminated his Shadi.com autopay feature and used Google to look out the matrimonial website’s customer service number.
The victim then called the number he had discovered on Google, and shortly after, he received a call from someone offering to help. The accused then called the victim on WhatsApp, claiming that there was a network problem and requesting more details from him.
“The complainant got suspicious of that person, but by the time he called the customer care of his bank and closed his account, he had been duped of Rs 5 lakh which was debited from his account,” Inspector Naveen Kumar, station house officer (SHO) of Cyber Crime (South) police station said.
It was discovered during police questioning that the accused and his friends had provided their number to Shaadi.com’s customer service department. The number for Shaadi.com’s customer service is displayed in the search engine whenever someone looks for it.
After that, they would learn that their number had been searched. They would then be called, or the accused would phone the victim and persuade them to click on a link in the name of assistance. By sharing the screen, they would obtain the bank account details and perpetrate fraud.
From the accused’s possession, the police have retrieved 14 cell phones, 8 Aadhar cards, 6 ATM/credit cards, and 1 PAN card that were utilized in the scam.
