Four suspects in an advanced bank account fraud that took on those in unstable economic situations were caught by Guwahati Police. The Cyber Police Station operation in Guwahati has exposed an efficient network of scammers who would trick innocent victims into giving over their bank accounts in exchange for instant cash.
Anvesh Chandra, Bablu Das, Chinmoy Chakraborty, and Abinash Mahato were the individuals arrested; they were the ones using burner phones and false names to operate these accounts. Members of the organization would trick the original account owners into losing control of their bank accounts by using a method known as the “mule account” scam. In these situations, accounts would be used for illegal activities, yet the account holder is personally liable for the illegal activities.
A police investigation produced a wealth of criminal proof that was collected. 44 checkbooks, 12 bank passbooks, 49 debit/ATM cards, foreign currency from Thailand and the United Arab Emirates, seven PhonePe UPI scanners, 17 SIM cards, three transaction-dense personal diaries, an international driver’s license, seven cell phones, a passport, and a Maruti Suzuki Alto vehicle were found. Anvesh Chandra, one of the main suspects, was found to be the owner of the passport and the vehicle.
The investigation was started in response to an allegation by Rahit Ali, a victim of the scam who lived in Guwahati. The police’s quick response eventually paid off, as the culprits were apprehended and subjected to intense questioning.
Commissioner of Police Diganta Barah said, “Cybercrime is becoming increasingly dangerous in the region, and people must be aware of this crime. People should immediately report suspected activities to the police.” However, the commissioner later said that in Guwahati alone, more than ₹35 crore was siphoned off by cybercriminals in the last year, out of which only ₹2.5 crore has been recovered so far.
