Pune is seeing an increase in cybercrime cases as crooks employ more advanced schemes to trick locals.

Nine cases totalling ₹3,35,03,177 were reported to different police stations in the city on Wednesday, October 16. The victims fell for schemes that promised large rewards through online task tasks, insurance money collecting, and stock market trading.

Police reports indicate that events were reported at a number of police stations, including Bibwewadi, Chandan Nagar, Hadapsar, and Sahakar Nagar in Pune.

The cases were brought for fraud and under the Information Technology Act. Even though these crimes have been registered, investigations are moving slowly since the police do not have enough technical resources or qualified personnel.

Over the past few months, police have observed a consistent rise in cybercrime incidents, underscoring the necessity of increased public awareness and preventative actions. Fighting cybercrime has been found to be significantly hampered by a lack of public awareness of the issue.

One of the incidences that was recorded was a senior citizen, age 65, who lost ₹23.53 lakhs after being contacted by scammers posing as India Finance Authority representatives.

Under the pretence of an insurance fund, the con artists persuaded the victim to deposit the money. In a another case, a young guy was defrauded of ₹34.69 lakhs by promising him large profits from stock market investments. Fraudulent stock market investment plans were also engaged in another case.

Residents are being advised by authorities to exercise caution and confirm the legitimacy of any financial offers, particularly those made over the phone or online.
