Cyber scammers are always coming up with new schemes to trick people. In a shocking case from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, a man was tricked out of ₹11 lakh by fraudsters using the well-known TV program Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) as a cover. The victim was scammed into thinking he had won a Nexon automobile, only to caught in a web of lies.
The victim was tricked into falling for the fraud when he got a link on the internet saying he had played Kaun Banega Crorepati. It told him he had won a Nexon automobile when he clicked on the link and answered a few questions. But the scammers quickly had second thoughts and handed him ₹8.5 lakh in cash in place of the vehicle.
Scammers Steal ₹11 Lakh
The victim quickly paid the ₹1,200 registration fee that the scammers demanded in order to claim the cash award. However, the scammers continued in requesting more money through different transactions, eventually defrauding the victim out of ₹11 lakh.
The victim reported the crime to the local cyber police station after realizing he had been duped. Authorities acted quickly upon receiving his complaint, suspending many bank accounts connected to the scheme and putting ₹2 lakh on hold.
Police Freeze Bank Accounts
The police reportedly disclosed that the scammers had targeted on an employee of a jewelry store by pretending to be KBC participants and defrauded him of ₹11 lakh. The police took efforts to recover ₹2 lakh and froze the bank accounts after receiving the report.
After seeing a phony KBC link on Facebook, the victim kept sending money because he thought he had won the Nexon automobile. The cybercrime police station is currently looking into the case.
