From Chalkboards to Chatbots: How AI can revolutionize education: By Dr Akhil Damodaran, Dean School of Management IILM University and CEO Elteridium

Over the past six years, we’ve witnessed a seismic shift in the global economy, marked by the emergence of several transformative trends. The onset of the pandemic in 2020 propelled online education into the spotlight, swiftly followed by the meteoric rise of cryptocurrency, the fervor surrounding the metaverse, and most recently, the all-encompassing focus on artificial intelligence (AI). Yet, amidst these waves of innovation, one constant has emerged: digitalization is here to stay. The era of digital transformation is not just a trend; it is an inevitability. As we stand at the cusp of this new digital age, the market hype cycle seems to be stabilizing, with AI now poised as the dominant force shaping our future.

As we prepare future leaders, it’s no longer sufficient to merely educate about AI; the true challenge lies in integrating AI into the very fabric of education. The advent of tools like ChatGPT, with its ability to create customized GPTs (Generative Pre-trained Transformers), presents an unprecedented opportunity for educators to revolutionize their teaching methods. These AI-driven tools enable the creation of personalized courses, tailored modules, and interactive features that enhance the learning experience in ways previously unimaginable.

Let me illustrate this with a practical example from my own experience. I have trained a GPT model to analyze old question papers, assess my course notes, and even evaluate video transcripts, closely mirroring the feedback I provide. The result? A chatbot that has captivated my students. They now engage with this AI assistant outside of class, revisiting lessons, clarifying doubts on topics discussed, and, in essence, extending the learning experience beyond traditional classroom boundaries. Another instance is a chatbot we developed to guide students in selecting courses. This AI not only interacts with them on a personal level, inquiring about their backgrounds and interests, but also offers tailored advice on which programs align with their goals.

Furthermore, we have empowered our faculty by creating customized guiding notes within the GPT framework, helping them prepare more effectively for classes. This AI assistant aids in crafting notes, formulating problem-solving questions, and enriching the overall educational content. What is particularly noteworthy is that, for the first time, students and faculty are on an equal footing, both exploring and learning about AI simultaneously. This shared journey underscores the importance of embracing AI together, fostering an environment of mutual growth and understanding.

As it is important that faculty and students explore more platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and others, the true breakthroughs in AI will not stem from the sheer number of large language models (LLMs) flooding the market but from how these models are applied to solve everyday problems. Drawing a parallel to the rise of operating systems like Windows and Mac, the true value emerged not from the platforms themselves but from the applications and software built upon them. Similarly, educators and students must explore AI’s potential to develop solutions that address real-world challenges. Customized GPTs offer a unique gateway into this process, serving as a vital resource for both teaching and learning.

The time has come to embrace AI as a powerful tool for revolutionizing education. To prepare the future workforce, we must not only teach AI but also use it, integrate it, and allow it to reshape how we learn. AI won’t replace faculty-student interactions, classroom discussions, case studies, labs, or traditional pedagogy, but it has the potential to enhance them all. This marks the dawn of a new era in education, with AI as the key to unlocking its full potential.
