The state investment agency IDA Ireland said on Thursday that IBM, which opened a new location and plans to hire up to 800 more employees in Ireland, made the largest employment announcement in the country’s multinational industry this year.

State investment agency IDA Ireland said on Thursday that the largest employment announcement in the nation’s multinational industry this year was made by IBM (IBM.N), which opened a new site and intends to hire up to 800 more workers in Ireland to help produce innovative software supported by AI technology.

The U.S. provider of IT software and consulting services, one of the biggest multinational employers in Ireland with 3,000 employees, is expanding its workforce to include positions in digital sales, consulting, and research and development.

Ireland’s labor market is largely dependent on foreign multinational corporations, which have nearly doubled their workforce in the past ten years to account for 11% of all jobs.

However, last year saw a 0.3% decline in multinational employment—the first yearly loss since 2009—as layoffs in the technology sector outweighed job growth in all other sectors.

In a statement, Michael Lohan, the chief executive of IDA Ireland, stated that “this is set to deliver real uplift in the Irish technology ecosystem by advancing capabilities across key growth areas for IDA Ireland, such as cloud, AI, quantum, and cybersecurity.”
