IBM unveils new commercial AI models as the competition for genAI intensifies

IBM unveiled the most recent iteration of its business-oriented AI models in an attempt to leverage the growing number of companies implementing generative AI on Monday.

Like the preceding iterations of IBM’s Granite family of AI models, “Granite 3.0” models will be made publicly available. This strategy is different from competitors like Microsoft, which charge users to view their models.

In response, IBM provides Watsonx, a paid solution that facilitates the execution of bespoke models inside data centres.

Beginning Monday, certain Granite model variations will be commercially available on the Watsonx platform. Additionally, a number of these models will be accessible through Nvidia’s suite of software tools that let companies use AI models.

Nvidia’s H100 graphics processor units (GPUs), a pioneer in AI chips, were used to train the new Granite models, according to IBM’s head of research, Dario Gil.
