With the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) leading the charge, India is making notable advancements in data center infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI).

The private sector has responded to the India AI Mission with bids for nearly 20,000 GPUs, surpassing the basic goal of 10,000 GPUs. This intense interest is a reflection of India’s rising desire to increase its computing capability, which is crucial for fostering AI innovation and advancing the nation’s goal of becoming a worldwide leader in AI.

The AI mission is currently concentrating on fundamental models that go beyond conventional big language models, MeitY Secretary S Krishnan told the media. According to him, these new models will be able to manage a variety of data and applications because of their multimodal capabilities. According to Krishnan, the government anticipates that a number of the AI mission’s projects would be completed by 2025, which would be a major turning point in India’s development as a major AI powerhouse worldwide.

The government is tackling vital infrastructure demands including data centers and electricity requirements in addition to AI. India’s data center capacity, which is now 1,000 MW, has to increase significantly to satisfy the demands of an economy that is quickly digitizing. According to Krishnan, the government is collaborating closely with state governments to promote growth in this sector and is funding a portion of this capacity building.

Although addressing local demand is the primary priority, he pointed out that India is willing to export excess data center capacity to foreign nations. This is in line with the government’s goal of making India a major center for data infrastructure worldwide. India’s preparedness to commit data center capacity for international usage was discussed during a recent visit by the UN Secretary-General, underscoring the nation’s potential in this regard.

MeitY is establishing the groundwork for India to emerge as a worldwide leader in technology by fusing aggressive AI projects with focused investments in data center infrastructure. It is anticipated that these initiatives would spur innovation, boost output, and establish India as a major force in the global digital economy.
