Following a massive ransomware assault that affected over 160 government agencies last month, Indonesia said that it is beginning to restore the encrypted data.
After over 160 government entities were hit by a significant ransomware attack last month, Indonesia said that it is starting to restore the encrypted data. According to Singapore-based cybersecurity company StealthMole, the attackers known as Brain Cipher demanded $8 million in ransom to access the data before eventually apologizing and giving up the decryption key. Numerous government services, including immigration and operations at large airports, have been affected by the ransomware attack. Officials from Indonesia have admitted that most of the data was not backed up.
The Chief Security Minister, Hadi Tjahjanto, stated in a statement late on Thursday that a “decryption strategy” had been used to retrieve data for 30 public services supervised by 12 ministries. He did not provide further details. “To regain services or assets from ministries, state agencies, and the impacted regional governments, the communications ministry is employing a decryption technique. Our approach to this is incremental,” the statement read.
If the government had utilized the decryption key for Brain Cipher, it would not have been immediately apparent. Requests for feedback from Hadi and Communications Minister Budi Arie Setiadi were not immediately answered. Attackers using ransomware employ software to encrypt data, then demand payment from their targets in order to decrypt it. According to Indonesia, Lockbit 3.0, a malicious piece of software, was employed in this attack.
