International operation dismantles 'Ghost' cybercrime platform

Europol released a statement on Wednesday stating that an international law enforcement operation has taken down the Ghost encrypted communication platform, which was widely recognized for cybercrime facilitating extensive drug trafficking and money laundering.

51 people from various nations have been arrested as a result of the investigation, and further arrests are anticipated.

Due to its sophisticated security measures, the platform had become popular among criminal organizations; therefore, its removal represents a serious setback to international networks of organized crime.

“This was truly a global game of cat and mouse, and today, the game is up,” Europol’s Deputy Executive Director Jean-Philippe Lecouffe told reporters.

According to Europol, the operation stopped multiple threats to life, dismantled an Australian drug lab, and resulted in the worldwide recovery of guns, drugs, and more than 1 million euros ($1.11 million) in cash.

“Today we have made it clear that no matter how hidden criminal networks think they are, they can’t evade our collective effort,” Europol’s Executive Director Catherine De Bolle said, calling the Ghost platform “a lifeline for serious organised crime”.

As part of a larger effort to combat international organized crime, the operation was carried out with assistance from authorities from Australia, Canada, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States.

More interruption of illicit activity is expected as the inquiry progresses.
