Internet ransomware "Akira" capable of data theft and extortion: Government warns

CERT-In advises individuals and organizations to maintain offline backups of critical data to stay safe from Akira.

In response to an emerging cyber threat, the government’s technology agency, CERT-In, has issued a cautionary advisory regarding a menacing Internet ransomware dubbed “Akira.” This insidious malware targets Windows and Linux-based systems, employing sophisticated techniques to steal crucial information and encrypt valuable data, putting victims at risk of extortion, as per HT report.

According to CERT-In, the “Akira” ransomware follows a dangerous double extortion strategy to maximize its impact. The initial step involves covertly pilfering sensitive information from infected systems. Once completed, the malware then proceeds to encrypt the victim’s data, rendering it inaccessible to the user. In a harrowing twist, the attackers then threaten to publish the stolen data on their dark web platform if a ransom is not paid.

“CERT-In emphasizes the gravity of this threat, urging all Internet users to adopt basic online hygiene and protection protocols to safeguard themselves against such cyber-attacks,” the advisory stated.

As part of their recommendations, CERT-In advises individuals and organizations to maintain offline backups of critical data. By regularly updating these backups, users can significantly reduce the risk of permanent data loss in the event of an attack. Backups stored offline are impervious to the reach of ransomware and remain a vital contingency plan against such malicious attempts.

Additionally, the agency highlights the importance of adhering to a robust password policy. Strong, unique passwords for all accounts and devices can create an essential defense barrier against cyber threats like “Akira.” Using complex combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols, along with multi-factor authentication when available, can be crucial in thwarting potential breaches.

Awareness and vigilance remain the most potent tools in the fight against cybercriminals. Users should remain cautious while clicking on unfamiliar links or downloading suspicious files. Employing reliable antivirus software and regularly updating operating systems and applications can further bolster defenses against evolving threats.

In conclusion, the government’s CERT-In has issued a timely warning about the treacherous “Akira” ransomware, cautioning all Internet users to fortify their digital defenses. By adhering to basic online protection measures, maintaining offline backups of essential data, and implementing a strong password policy, individuals and organizations can enhance their resilience against cyber attacks. Remember, cybersecurity is a collective responsibility that demands constant vigilance in the face of ever-evolving threats.
