INTERPOL Seizes Over $400 Million and Arrests 5,500 in Global Cybercrime Crackdown

More than 5,500 suspects in financial crimes have been arrested as a result of a global law enforcement operation, and more than $400 million in virtual assets and government-backed currencies have been seized.

Authorities from 40 nations, territories, and regions participated in the coordinated exercise, which was part of the most recent phase of Operation HAECHI-V, which was conducted from July to November 2024, according to INTERPOL.

“The effects of cyber-enabled crime can be devastating – people losing their life savings, businesses crippled, and trust in digital and financial systems undermined,” INTERPOL Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza said in a statement.

“The borderless nature of cybercrime means international police cooperation is essential, and the success of this operation supported by INTERPOL shows what results can be achieved when countries work together. It’s only through united efforts that we can make the real and digital worlds safer.”

As part of HAECHI-V, INTERPOL reported that Beijing and Korean authorities worked together to take down a large voice phishing gang that caused over 1,900 victims to suffer financial losses of $1.1 billion.

The e-crime group used fake identity and pretended to be law enforcement officers as part of the fraudulent scheme. The organized criminal group responsible for the plan has arrested at least 27 members, and 19 of them have now been charged.

Additionally, INTERPOL has issued a purple notice alerting people to a new cryptocurrency fraud practice known as the USDT Token Approval Scam. This scam enables criminals to embezzle victims’ money by using romance-themed lures to fool them into purchasing and investing in well-known Tether stablecoins (USDT tokens).
