DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence model, was barred by Italy’s data protection regulator on Thursday due to its lack of disclosure over how it uses personal data.
DeepSeek was unavailable in the Italian Google and Apple app stores on Wednesday, the day after the Garante, the regulator, asked for details on how it uses personal data.
The Chinese firms who offer DeepSeek with chatbot services gave information that “was considered to totally insufficient,” according to a post on the authority’s website. This prompted the authority to take action to protect the privacy of Italian users.
The Garante also stated that an inquiry had been launched and that the decision had “immediate effect.”
