Six cybercriminals who ran a sophisticated conspiracy producing phoney mobile applications that imitated bank services and government initiatives have been taken into custody by Jamtara Police. After a month-long investigation, the group behind the moniker “DK Boss” was arrested. The group has been connected to 415 cybercrime complaints around the country, including scams of almost Rs 11 crore.
Creating harmful programs that could hack victims’ phones and access their personal data for illicit activities was the syndicate’s method of operation. According to a press release on Wednesday, these software were sold to other hackers for Rs 25,000 apiece after being spread over WhatsApp.
The statement claims that in order to look into and stop these cybercrimes, Jamtara SP Ehtesham Waquarib assembled a special squad headed by IPS (probationer) Raghvendra Sharma, along with DSP Chandra Shekhar and cyber police station inspector Jayant Tirkey.
According to the team’s study, the scammers built applications that imitated real schemes like PM Kisan Yojna, PM Fasal Bima Yojna, and other bank services. After being downloaded, these applications have the ability to infiltrate users’ phones and employ call and SMS forwarding to collect bank account information.
During the inquiry, it was discovered that a highly advanced centralized panel was capable of concurrently monitoring SMS conversations, including OTPs, from thousands of victims. From the confiscated mobile phones, police also found more than a hundred harmful apps, which are still being examined.
Five of the six people detained in this case are from the Giridih area, one is from Jamtara, and four have a history of cybercrime. The Union ministry’s cybercrime coordination center and the state CID’s tech support team have been contacted by Jamtara Police due to the seriousness of the matter.
