Among the biggest video-sharing platforms in Japan, Niconico, where users may post films of anything from sports to music to hobbies to press appearances by public authorities, was hit by a cyberattack.
Due to “a large-scale cyberattack,” Niconico, a well-known Japanese video-sharing website, has had to cease operations, according to its operator. Operator Dwango said in a statement late on Saturday that “Nicolas is currently under a large-scale cyberattack, and we are suspending our services to minimize its impact.”
It stated that it didn’t anticipate being able to restore the service this weekend and that it was “hurriedly investigating and taking countermeasures, but we won’t be able to restore the service until we make sure about its safety after completely excluding the impact of the cyberattack.”
One of the biggest video-sharing websites in Japan is Niconico, where users may post a variety of movies about anything from sports to music to hobbies and watch live programming like press conferences.
Apart from Niconico, the main website of parent firm Kadokawa and its e-commerce platform “ebten” were also impacted by a potential “unauthorized access from outside,” the publisher reported on Sunday. “We offer our deep apology for causing worries and troubles over the phenomenon that several websites of the Kadokawa Group have been unavailable since before the dawn of Saturday,” Kadokawa, a publisher with a Tokyo office, said.
It stated that Kadokawa was working with police and outside experts to investigate the effects of the incident, including “whether there have been leaks of information or not.”
