Japan on Wednesday connected over 200 cyberattacks targeting the country’s national security and high technology data to the Chinese hacker organization MirrorFace, revealing their techniques and urging government agencies and companies to strengthen preventive measures. The National Police Agency stated that its investigation into the targets, tactics, and infrastructure of MirrorFace’s assaults from 2019 to 2024 revealed that they were systematic attacks linked to China with the goal of collecting data on Japanese national security and sophisticated technologies.
The Chinese government’s cyberattacks targeted Japan’s Foreign and Defense Ministries, the country’s space agency, as well as people such as legislators, journalists, and private firms, according to the NPA.
Experts have regularly expressed worries about Japan’s cybersecurity vulnerability, particularly as the country expands its military capabilities and collaborates more closely with the United States and other allies to improve cyber defenses.
MirrorFace sent emails with malware attachments to selected businesses and people between December 2019 and July 2023, typically from Gmail and Outlook accounts using stolen identities, according to the NPA investigation. AP
