Jharkhand Police has released a public advisory warning people against falling for scammers posing as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers in response to an increase in cybercrime cases. Cybercriminals use false pretenses to frighten victims and extort money by stating they or their family members are involved in legal issues.
Jharkhand Police claim that scammers are contacting people under false pretenses of being CBI agents or other government representatives in an attempt to obtain sensitive personal data. “If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a ‘CBI officer’ and asking for sensitive details, it’s a scam. Do not fall for it,” the police warned.
How the Scam Works
Cybercriminals typically use the claim that they are embroiled in legal or criminal proceedings in an effort to scare their victims. They frequently assert that a parcel bearing the victim’s name that contained illegal narcotics had been intercepted or that an arrest order had been issued. They demand money, threatening more legal action if it is not paid, in order to escape being arrested.
Fear is frequently used to deceive victims into believing the fraud, which results in financial losses. The public is advised by Jharkhand Police to refrain from sending money or disclosing any personal information in such circumstances.
Reporting Fraudulent Calls
If someone receives one of these bogus calls, they are advised to report the event online via the Cyber Crime Portal or by phoning the cybercrime helpline at 1930. The public has been informed by the police that these offenders would face prompt consequences.
The Jharkhand Police is on the lookout for scams that deceive people online, and they are doing everything they can to safeguard the public from them.
