Jio Platforms is collaborating with technology giants like Nvidia to co-develop AI language models in order to provide revolutionary solutions like personalized and reasonably priced AI-as-a-service and AI agent applications. This is as Reliance Industries prepares to upend the AI market by lowering data costs, just as it did in the telecom industry.
RIL’s technology division is taking part in the India AI Mission on the infrastructure side, having partnered with Nvidia to obtain their top-tier Blackwell GPUs.
According to a senior business official who spoke to media about RIL’s overall plan regarding next-generation technologies, Jio hopes to provide GPU-as-a-service to researchers and entrepreneurs at the most affordable pricing in the world after it is empanelled.
“There are three factors to accessible and affordable AI – the device, the data (on cloud), and high-speed broadband networks and Jio is working on all these so that every individual can have a personal AI agency based on his needs and likes,” the executive said on condition of anonymity.
Jio Platforms is developing AI use cases in industries including retail, healthcare, agriculture, and education in collaboration with Nvidia and other partners.
“The way Jio has democratised data usage we want to do the same with AI,” the CEO stated in reference to how Reliance Jio caused mobile data rates in India to plummet and are currently among the lowest in the world.
Additionally, Reliance Industries uses Nvidia GPUs for captive usage and to develop Jio-branded goods and services on large language models (LLMs).
In addition to the AI Mission, Jio is looking to monetize its corporate AI package, Jio Brain.
“The AI Mission is a government initiative to offer GPUs at a subsidised cost. For instance, assuming if the price is Rs 25 per GPU hour, the government will subsidise Rs 5-10 out of that. We (Jio and others) as vendors will compete to offer lower prices to Rs 25,” the executive explained.
A initiative of Rs 10,300 crore, the India AI Mission aims to encourage ethical AI innovation throughout the nation. Of that, Rs 5,000 crore has been set aside for the provision of AI computing gear through partnerships with data center businesses, cloud providers, etc.
In December, Jio Platforms and eighteen other bidders filed bids that are currently being evaluated technically in order to be eligible for empanelment under the Mission.
In addition to providing GPU-as-a-service to commercial enterprises like the India AI Mission, RIL is constructing a 1 GW AI data center in Jamnagar for captive usage. According to the CEO, Jio plans to put AI closer to the edge by expanding its AI inferencing capabilities throughout India as consumption grows.
When asked about the high cost of AI infrastructure and running LLMs, the executive said, “Green energy will play a big role in bringing down operational costs of AI going forward. Global research has also suggested that there has been a significant decline in cost of AI hardware. India needs affordability. Without that, AI is just a fancy thing here… It will never scale up.”
According to the individual, AI has to be accessible on inexpensive devices via cloud-hosted data.
Through the Jio Brain suite, Reliance is internally striving to integrate AI into corporate processes across all of its businesses, including retail store security, telecom network management, and oil and gas refinery operations.
Jio Brain is housed under Jio Platforms.
“We are creating end-to-end workflows with real-time data, which helps us in smarter and quicker decision making,” the executive said. “Think of it as automatic, very simple manual tasks. But at scale, they create so much value. Once Jio Brain as a platform is perfected within Reliance, we can offer it to other enterprises as well.”
Jio recently announced that customers may save any digital stuff, including documents, movies, and images, for free up to 100 GB of cloud storage.
