José Muñoz appointed as First Foreign CEO at Hyundai Motor

José Muñoz has been named the next CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, becoming the first foreigner to hold the role at the South Korean carmaker. On January 1, 2025, José Muñoz, who has been with Hyundai as global chief operating officer in charge of North and South American markets, will formally assume the position. Jaehoon Chang, who will take over as vice-chairman of Hyundai’s automotive sector, is replaced by him.

As the head of Nissan Motor Corporation’s China division, Muñoz brings decades of experience to the table.

His vast experience in the international auto business is anticipated to be a significant advantage as Hyundai negotiates the difficulties of its electric car transition and adjusts to changing regulations, such as the most recent adjustments to U.S. tax incentives for EV buyers. Hyundai also appointed Sung Kim as president and Jun Young Choi as president of its sibling firm, Kia Corp., in addition to Muñoz.
