Karnataka will be the first state in India to establish a Director General of Police (DGP) post that is exclusively focused on cybersecurity. The new position will improve the investigation of economic, drug, and cybercrimes and be a part of a specialized vertical inside the police agency.
This action builds on Karnataka’s increasing success in combating cybercrime, which began in the early 2000s when India’s first cybercrime police station was established.
Although Karnataka’s districts already run their own police stations and cybercrime cells, the creation of a central vertical seeks to unify and simplify these initiatives under a single administration. The new DGP position can then be formally created if the Finance Department approves a proposal from the Karnataka Home Department.
In addition to the four DGP posts that are now available in Karnataka, a fifth role will be introduced. Currently, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Fire and Emergency Services, and Prisons and Correctional Services are headed by DGP-ranked officers, while the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP) is in charge of the state police force. Particularly, the fifth DGP will be in charge of the Cyber, Economics, and Narcotics (CEN) crime wing.
To combat the rise in cybercrime, Karnataka established a new Cyber, Economics, and Narcotics (CEN) division inside the CID earlier this year. An ADGP-ranking officer named Pronab Mohanty was chosen to spearhead the effort and manage activities meant to address issues related to cybercrime.
With the state’s fast expanding technology sector, Karnataka is taking a proactive approach to combating financial crimes, drug-related offenses, and cyber dangers. This is reflected in the planned structure.
Residents of the capital city of Bengaluru alone have lost Rs 1,242.7 crore in the first eight months of this year due to cybercrime, which is a considerable increase of Rs 214.6 crore over prior years. Up till August 31, 2024, 12,356 cybercrimes were reported in the city. This increase comes after 17,633 cybercrimes in 2023.
