The LF India was established by the Linux Foundation to promote open collaboration among Indian open source developers, businesses, government agencies, and the community. With an initial focus on open-source initiatives encompassing cloud-native, telecommunications, Edge/IoT, blockchain, security, and domain-specific AI technologies across all vertical segments, LF India will collaborate with regional entrepreneurs and Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs).
Almost 200,000 Indian developers currently participate in open-source initiatives run by the Linux Foundation. The Linux Foundation will act as the “sandbox for innovation” in the area with LF India, speeding up the incubation and support of open-source software (OSS) projects for IGOs, businesses, and startups. LF India will provide open-source software training, local events, and meetups to developers in order to support this expanding and skilled community.
“As open source continues on its global growth trajectory, we are time and again inspired by the rapid adoption of open technology in India, driven by policy and investment by government and organisations across the region,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director, Linux Foundation. “LF India is an important milestone in the Linux Foundation’s mission to expand global awareness of open source. We look forward to future partnerships with government leaders, enterprises, and the developer community during this exciting time of open-source advancement.”
By 2028, India’s rapidly expanding developer community is expected to surpass all others worldwide. The region’s dedication to open innovation and technology, which includes a robust digital public infrastructure constructed with open-source software, supports this highly competent group. Open technology investment keeps rising, giving developers the chance to make significant contributions to game-changing innovations and enhancing the expanding deep tech startup scene.
“We are excited to launch LF India focused on building collaborative open source communities and providing a sandbox for next-generation projects,” said Arpit Joshipura, GM/SVP and Head of LF India. “Our focus will be on local innovation with global impact and from consumption to contribution.”
