Maharashtra will soon establish its own Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategy to position the state as a significant participant in the field and a pioneer in technical breakthroughs, according to a minister.

State Information and Technology Minister Ashish Shelar issued the directive to authorities at a meeting with IT Department officials on Tuesday at the Sahyadri Guest House.

MahaIT Managing Director Jayshree Bhoj, IT Department Secretary Parrag Jaiin Nainutia, and top representatives from the relevant departments attended the meeting.

According to an official release, Shelar emphasized throughout the meeting the significance of using AI to advance sectors, draw in companies, generate jobs, and position Maharashtra as a key participant in the AI space.

He said the AI era has begun and that the state must seize this opportunity. “By adopting AI, we can drive economic growth, generate jobs for the youth, and strengthen our position in the global AI landscape,” he said.

With a budget of Rs 10,372 crore, the federal government established the India AI Mission earlier this year with the goal of improving AI skills throughout the country. According to the statement, it encompasses programs like the India AI Datasets Platform, application development courses, graphic processing units, innovation centers, talent development, and assistance for AI companies.

Shelar emphasized that in order for Maharashtra to be competitive, its AI goals must be in line with this national initiative.

In order to create a comprehensive database for the India AI Datasets Platform, the federal government will start gathering and combining non-personal datasets in January 2025. According to the statement, this will provide researchers, universities, businesses, and startups easy access to create specialized services and AI applications.
