Charlie Dutton, an equity investment leader with extensive experience in Asia, has been hired by Manulife Investment Management to the newly created position of chief investment officer, global emerging market equities.
According to a statement from the asset management, Dutton (pictured) will use local resources and insights from around the company to oversee and unify Manulife IM’s Asia ex-Japan and emerging market equity capabilities in this new role.
Despite spending time in Asia with the investment teams throughout the region, he will remain located in London.
“The closer alignment of the Asia equity team with the global emerging markets equity organisation formalizes the longstanding sharing of ideas and insights between our Asia and our emerging markets equity teams,” said Colin Purdie, global chief investment officer, public markets, Manulife Investment Management.
Dutton has over 27 years of experience in the financial business, including 25 years of covering Asian stocks, including seven years in Hong Kong, South Africa, and London. He oversaw funds across five strategies as a member of Ninety One’s global quality capabilities team before joining Manulife Investment Management’s emerging markets equities unit early this year.
Prior to Ninety One, Dutton managed Asian-focused equity funds for ten years as a founding partner of the Asian investment firm Coupland Cardiff. He had previously been located in Hong Kong and served as a Hong Kong/China consumer analyst at JF Securities and as director of Asia Pacific research at JPMorgan. His career began at HSBC based in Hong Kong as a HK/China analyst.
“We are confident [Dutton’s] deep investment experience, including over 25 years investing in Asia equity, makes him ideally suited to take on the role of CIO, emerging markets equities,” said Steve Medina, chief investment officer, global equities, Manulife Investment Management.
Meanwhile, Manulife IM announced that Kathryn Langridge, head of the emerging markets equity team, senior managing director, and senior portfolio manager, will retire on October 31, 2025, following more than 40 years in the investing industry. Ronald Chan, the former CIO of Japan Equity’s Asia division, is also departing the asset manager.
